Quarry Noise Reduction - £800,000 Saved

Residents of several villages surrounding a large quarry complained about the quarry noise. So the quarry owner consulted a noise survey company.  They carried out a noise survey at five village locations over several days and nights. This concluded that noise levels exceeded the night time planning noise limit at four of the village locations. They also concluded that the noise is likely to be caused by the rock crusher machines.  The company recommended that the quarry fitted soundproofing to the interior of the building containing the 3 large rock crusher machines.  This is a very large and very tall building.  When the quarry company obtained a quote, the cost of soundproofing the crusher building came to £800,000.

Due to the extremely high cost of the building soundproofing, the quarry company decided to obtain a second opinion from a specialist noise reduction company, and they consulted us. We carried out detailed diagnostic noise measurements.  These tests showed that most of the noise is generated by the dust extract fans that suck dust from the rock crushing machines inside the crusher building, then pass it through dust filters before exhausting the air to atmosphere.  Our tests also showed that because the noise from the rock crusher machines was so much lower than the extract fan noise, soundproofing the crusher building would provide no reduction at all in the noise transmitted to the villages.  So had the quarry company installed this soundproofing, they would have spent £800,000 for no noise reduction benefit.

Our expertise and diagnostic noise measurements saved the quarry company £800,000.

We are currently helping the quarry company to reduce the noise from their large dust extract fans.  The cost for this is not yet known but is likely to be in the region of 1% of the soundproofing quote.
